Finasteride, sold under the brand names Proscar and Propecia among others, is a medication used to treat pattern hair loss and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men. Most commonly its used for blocking the conversion of DHT which in turn will help prevent balding.
DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone, DHT a male characteristic which all males have and is important in the developtment of males, however DHT is an androgen and higher doses can lead to higher DHT side effects such as over active sebum production,and male pattern baldness.
